We aim to provide top quality fodder for horse owners throughout Scotland. We can cater for all needs ranging from individual horse owners to large livery yards. Our products are grown by us, packed by us, and delivered by us, to ensure total customer satisfaction. Our farm, Mains of Buthlaw, has always produced high-quality grass for feeding our cattle and sheep. Over time, we have moved away from livestock production and headed towards a growing demand for high-quality haylage, hay and straw products for the equestrian market. Fifteen years ago, we began to brand our products under the Ugie Valley Feeds brand and began to product a range of bale sizes and packs to cater for different markets. We are now in a position where we can grow all our products, process them into a variety of bale sizes and deliver to our customers using our own lorries. Allowing us to have complete control over quality and delivery options for individual customer needs. In 2019 we added our own Straw Pellet plant to our farm, which takes our home grown wheat straw, chops and compresses it into a small pellets shape using nothing but a drop of water. This makes a revolutionary horse bedding alternative, and is also a brilliant eco-friendly and sustainable to Cat Litter& small animal bedding, see our Straw pellet & Petlets product pages for more information.
Because we plant, nurture, harvest, and process all of our products ourselves, this gives us full control to ensure the quality is always exceptional to our customers. We take care to ensure the products that reach our customers are the best we can product, we do this by re-packing our products. Our smaller packs and individual bales are all re-baled on site, to ensure any excess dust is removed and the quality of our product is consistent.
We are always interested in how we can improve the sustainability and environmental benefits that our farming practices have. Our family have farmed at Mains of Buthlaw since the 1950’s and we see ourselves as custodians of this beautiful landscape, so are constantly looking for new ways to ensure we are doing all we can to make our soils and practices as ecologically balanced as possible. These include enriching our soils, we regularly test to see what our soils need and what they need less of, creating a much better biodiversity of the soil. We are huge fans of animal fertiliser instead of chemical fertiliser, which has naturally a much lower carbon footprint, a very positive bonus of the Scottish meat industry. We are extremely lucky to live within a few miles of an anaerobic digester which processes organic matter into biogas. The AD plant produces biofertilizer as a by-product, which our soil also loves!
Other ways we are reducing our carbon;
Improving our technology – we use GPS to sow and harvest all of our crops, ensuring the most efficient way to get our job done, using the least fuel we can, and reducing soil compaction to ensure the biodiversity of the soil below is kept at its best.
Protecting our water. We are extremely privilege to have the River Ugie run through our farm, which is a highly sought after fishing river as well as being used for drinking water.
Our 100% electric van, which completes deliveries throughout the Aberdeenshire countryside daily. Give us a wave if you do see us!
Our biomass boilers dry all our grain and some hay throughout the season. This saves ALOT of diesel and oil a year. Our biomass boilers also heat our workshops, pelleting plant, offices & homes on site.
